Chichen Itza – An ancient city in the modern world an excellent choice to visit during your vacation

Chichen Itza is one of the most popular places in Yucatan and in Mexico in general Chichén Itzá has been a sacred Mayan site for more than 700 years, and by the 11th century had been the political and religious capital of the revived Mayan empire under Toltec rule. Today, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chichén Itzá is one of the country’s most popular tourist attractions, attracting more than a million visitors annually and securing its place on the must-see list of every traveler heading to the beautiful Yucatán Peninsula.

Maya for “near the well of Itzá,” Chichén Itzá was founded around AD 450 by the Mayans who migrated from the south and are believed to have remained occupied long after they left. Research shows that the Toltecs from the highlands of central Mexico also visited this part of Yucatán in the 7th century, intermingling with the Mayans. This amalgamation of advanced civilizations resulted in a revival of Maya architecture in which Toltec influences predominated, leading to Chichén Itza’s remarkable similarity to the old Toltec capital Tollán. At the time of the Spanish Conquest in 1533, Chichén Itza was almost uninhabited, though it remains a place of pilgrimage. By the 19th century, the site had become a distinct place of pilgrimage as archaeologists from around the world visited and discovered many of the most important structures. The Chichén Itza archaeological zone covers eight square kilometers, only a few of which have been excavated.
